GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Lying in the northern part of the West Zambezi Game Management Area, Liuwa Plain National Park covers 3 660 km. The luambimba and Luanginga rivers run through the region and are flanked by grass-covered flood plain. Mixed woodland lies on the edges of the plains. As in most conservation areas I Zambia, poaching is a serious problem, and it reaches particularly high levels in the west. However, Liuwa Plain is known for its large herds of blue wildebeest and tsessebe, and buffalo, roan, plains zebra and red lechwe also occur. The area also has a rich birdlife. Location: Far western Zambia; west of Lusaka. Access: Difficult! From Lusaka follow the main road westwards for 610 km through Kaoma to Mongu; from Mongu continue westwards to Kalabo, crossing the Zambezi River by ferry; from Kalabo take the secondary road north-westwards to the western edge of the park. There is no internal road network. Check the road conditions and security situation with the authority in advance. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: None. Open: Access is possible only during the dry season. Beware: Malaria, tsetse fly.
